NotesMore canal walking saw me progress further north. Easy going, and the overhad power cables that slightly blighted he walk from Mile End soon vanished. The section along the River Stort in particular was quite rural. A boater I met on the Stort told me that there was once a plan for the canal to be extended from Bishop's Stortford to the Cam near Cambridge. It is a shame that this was never done, as it would have made the walk from Bishop's Stortford to Cambridge much easier.
DirectionsThis walk is incredibly easy to navigate - you just follow the River Lea Navigation walk up to Feildes Weir Lock and then head north-eastwards along the River Stort Navigation. Immediately adjacent to Burnt Mill Lock is Harlow Town station, although you have an annoying ten minute walk to get from the lock to the station entrance. There are some fairly details maps of the Canals featured in this walk on the British Waterways website at the British Waterways website. Also look at Jim Shead's canal pages for more details of this canal.
Distances
This makes a total distance of 12.6 miles, with 164 feet of ascent and 92 feet of descent.
