NotesThis was a pleasant walk on a day where I needed to do a great deal of thinking. This walk can be surprisingly rural in places, considering that you are in the heart of the East End. One of the better walks I know of in London.
DirectionsFrom Mile end tube station (District and Central lines), turn left and pass under the 'Green Bridge'. cross over onto the north side of Mile End road and continue walking until you get to the canal bridge. Turn right and follow the canal northwards. After half a mile the canal meets the Herford Union canal. Follow the Herford Union Canal to the east. After 1.25 miles, the Hertford Union Canal meets the River Lea Navigation. Turn left and follow this northwards. From here on it is a simple case of following the River through East London. There are some surprisingly scenic sections, and is one of my favourite walks in London for getting away from it all. There are some fairly details maps of the Canals featured in this walk on the British Waterways website at the British Waterways website. Also look at Jim Shead's canal pages for more details of this canal.
DedicationThis walk is dedicated to the memory of Russell Thomas and Owen Love, two colleagues of mine who died in a car crash two days before I did this walk. They will be sorely missed.
Distances
This makes a total distance of 12.7 miles, with 167 feet of ascent and 147 feet of descent.
